It's a really interesting book, and quite different from the more modern chemistry books I've seen. For example, the chapter on combustion contains lots of details about how to extinguish fires, describing the operation of various fire extinguishers and the composition of the chemicals they contain. It also has a very nice section that describes how combustion occurs in a furnace, and what considerations there are for ensuring efficient burning. Extremely cool, and definitely unlike other textbooks I've seen.

It's also interesting because it's so old, and techniques have changed so much. There are little things, like the suggestion that multiplication and division be performed with logarithms, since calculators were a ways off, and bigger things, like the rather different way molecules are described--rather than being described solely as consisting of X atoms of some element and Y atoms of another, in a certain configuration, as modern books do, this book describes them as consisting of certain weights of elementary substances--a difference motivated, I guess, by the experimental techniques used at the time for identifying the composition of compounds.

I'm quite glad I've been reading it. I'm a bit behind the schedule I set, I'm afraid--I read a contemporary review of the book which indicated certain problems with the selection of material and the presentation of some topics, which induced me to slow down my reading while searching for another book, but even if there are such problems, I still think it's worth reading.

It is my intention to write a fuller review of the book when I've finished it, so if you're interested in reading that, you'll need to wait another month or two. I hope this can satisfy your curiosity, for now.

I couldn't agree more. Comparing Eliza Bennet to the repugnant Brigit Jones is deeply offensive to the telent of Jane Austen and makes me really doubt the education of anyone who thinks so. Jones has no dignity, wit, intelligence and is completely without self esteem. </>Yet I see it echoed all over the web that BJD is a modern P&P. Only for the ignorant!

@wikipedia review</>I don't deny that Wikipedia has problems, or that students need to better understand what sort of information can and cannot be trusted. And, as scholars, to trust Wikipedia without verifying its sources would be folly. I do tend to think that Wikipedia is useful, though, and worth improving, and the idea that teachers should waste their time specifically teaching students about the 'threat' of Wikipedia seems more than a bit ludicrous.</></>Whatever the particular merits of Wikipedia, though, I can't see Lichtenstein's argument as being accurate, in any real sense. The only statement she makes that I really agree with is:</></>"There is a need for easy-to-use information that is correct and has been produced by a rigorous process."</></>However, I believe that a well-referenced Wikipedia article (like a < HREF="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GA" REL="nofollow">Good Article<>, say), when viewed by a discerning reader (as all students ought to be, when doing research) is just such a source of information. Not <>all<> articles are of sufficient quality to pass this test, but improving them so that they are seems like a good goal, to me.</></>While Lichtenstein says few things that are obviously wrong (her negative opinion of Wikipedia, however I may disagree with it, isn't really a falsifiable statement), she says few things that are clearly right, as well. Try not to confuse "I agree with her opinions" with "her analysis was accurate."

Leichenstein's analysis was fairly accurate. </></>Wikipedia fails to meet the basic standards required to become a service to students.
